A recent piece in Jalopnik caught our attention. The article covers a concept car that Nissan debuted back in the 1980’s. From the outside, the car didn’t look much different from contemporary Nissan models. Inside, it was a profusion of touchscreens, color graphics, and well-placed pushbuttons. In a quiet way, they had anticipated the future. Just look at the 2018 Nissan Murano, arriving soon at Mentor Nissan.

The exterior is the same design we’ve loved since we first laid eyes on it in the 2015 model year. It has the same understated grace, the lovely lines that combine just the right proportion of ultra-modern and classical, and that striking floating D pillar. The powertrain still combines a 3.5-liter V6 engine with an Xtronic CVT.

But inside, there are some great new features. For starters, some key active safety features — Automatic Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning — are now standard across the lineup. The center console has been redone for a more ergonomic layout, and the 8-inch NissanConnect touchscreen now gives access to Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® in addition to navigation. The hands-free power lift gate and adaptive cruise control come to the SL trim as standard features.

Optional features are a mixed bag. Some features, like optional all-wheel drive, we’ve seen before. The SV Premium Package brings adaptive cruise control, drowsy driver alert system, an 11-speaker Bose sound system, and Around View Monitor to the SV trim. The SL trim can be optioned with a moonroof package and / or an expanded Midnight Edition package. And if you have the Amazon Echo, you can teach Alexa to unlock your doors, start your car, or even honk the horn.

It may have taken a few decades, but that old Nissan concept car proved that the folks at Nissan weren’t just anticipating the future–they planned to shape it, and in many ways they’ve done just that.
