Difference Between Nissan SUVs and Crossovers

At times the process of buying a new car can be a bit overwhelming for someone who isn’t an expert on the subject. For instance knowing the difference between a crossover utility vehicle (CUV or crossover) and a sport utility vehicle (SUV) can seem intimidating at first, since both are so similar. However, our dedicated Nissan dealers at Mentor Nissan will help you every step of the way including figuring out the difference between these two body styles when it comes to Nissan cars.

What is a Crossover?

When looking through our Lake County Nissan inventory, you will come across quite a few of our compact and roomy crossovers. So, what exactly is a crossover? Although the crossover looks very similar to an SUV when it comes to the construction of both body styles, they actually are very different. A crossover uses what is called a “unibody” form, which means the body and frame are all in one piece. The crossover is also based on the platform of a car meaning it usually has slightly better handling and fuel efficiency than an SUV. Crossovers are great if you want the roominess of an SUV, but you don’t want to use as much as fuel. An amazing option for a crossover is the 2017 Nissan Rogue.

What is an SUV?

An SUV or sport utility vehicle is based on the chassis of a truck, rather than a car. Making the SUV fairly different than the crossover, despite the fact that they look similar in exterior design. Rather than having the body be one piece, the body is created separately from the frame and is put together later, thus giving the “body on frame” design. SUVs are a lot more rugged and have more powerful engines and power, which in turn give them a way higher towing capacity than crossovers. SUVs are a great option for large families or people who have heavy vessels to tow. The 2017 Nissan Armada is a great option for a full-size SUV.
